A sporadic letter of listening, reading, and watching suggestions.

This edition touches upon the impact of streaming video on the environment. The internet as a dark forest and some inspiration and tools to improve your web experience and the environment.

It’s dark out there.
📚Somebody recently shared a fascinating theory of recent digital behaviour the internet with me written by KickStarter Co-Founder Yancey Strickler.
‘In response to the ads, the tracking, the trolling, the hype, and other predatory behaviours, we’re retreating to our dark forests of the internet, and away from the mainstream.’
The Dark Forest is where I have been loitering along with many of you and we’ve been aiding the likes of Boris and Donald by doing so.

Porn makes up 27% of all online video.
In 2018 the emissions from all of that 'activity’ was the same as all of France’s households.
⛽️'Digital technologies now emit 4% of all greenhouse gas emissions, and its energy consumption is increasing by 9% a year.’
Watch this video and then. Pause. Literally. Ask yourself: 'Do I really need to binge watch Netflix for 8 hours straight?’

This can help
🔌A very simple plugin that you should add to Firefox that will help create a much more energy conscious web experience.
Did you know?
  1. 10 hours of high definition video comprises more data than all of the English articles on Wikipedia.
  2. Downloading 1 HD film will consume the same amount of electricity as is needed to charge 200 mobile phones.
  3. 5 billion videos are watched on YouTube every day.
  4. 3.25 billion hours of YouTube are watched each month.
  5. The average mobile YouTube viewing session lasts for 40 mins.

There is another way
🌳Ecosia is the alternative web browser.
Ecosia is a German non profit web browser. Like WeTransfer, 10 years old this year. Since their incorporation they have donated millions to support the environment. I wish I’d known about them sooner.
Use Ecosia to search for anything and for every 45 searches they will plant a tree. They have managed to plant 76million trees so far!!!

You need some down time.
🎧In light of this week subject I can’t suggest any film, so am going to focus purely on podcasts.

🙀10 Things that scare me. A tiny podcast about our biggest fears. A beautifully short production, perfect for a bus ride.
⛹🏿‍♀️30 for 30. Now in its 6th season this podcast keeps going strong. Sports and scandal.
🕳Intrigue: The tunnel. The story of a man who dug a tunnel under the Berlin wall.
👃🏾Multi Story. Another BBC production with a variety of stories from across the UK. A favourite is a recent version about a lady with a prosthetic nose for every occasion?!

It’s our birthday.
👯‍♀️As I mentioned we’re turning 10 years old. We’re having a party this week. If you’re in Amsterdam come along. There’s a great musical line up curated by Gilles Peterson and more. Just reply to this email and I’ll put your name down.
📻We launched a podcast called Influence. Its all about advertising, sex, Facebook and many other topics. With a bunch of special guests.
📗And lastly I want to give another push for my book. It’s called the Trust Manifesto. It’s been flying off the shelves. In fact we’ve sold literally 100x more printed copies than digital. Which I think is pretty cool. Thank you 🐧
That’s it. 👋🏻
Thanks for reading and for all your suggestions. Keep em coming.
🦊

🎅🏽PS. London is home to one of the world’s best tea shops; Postcard teas. They have a special Xmas box of their finest. You can make someone very happy with this.
