Any given Sunday

July 20 · Issue #20 · View online
This is an email from Damian Bradfield. It's a summary of things happening in and around the world of tech and my experiences as we build and develop WeTransfer. Be warned I swear, these thoughts are my own and not that....blah blah blah

Happy Sunday.
First off. I have a book coming out 4/10/2019. You can pre-order it here and all the proceeds will go to United for Global Mental Health.
It’s called the Trust Manifesto.

Freedom
In England, freedom is about individuality. Freedom is the right to be able to express oneself. Americans view freedom as the right to free speech. Also In Germany, freedom is the right to privacy. To be left alone. (Ich muss Deutsche sein)
Around the world, there is a growing fear that our freedom is slowly being eroded and it is clear that technology is a driving force.
As such, the German government have banned Office 365 due to concerns about privacy. Germany is at the forefront of all privacy discussions.
Top Tip: Want a piece of that action 👆🏽 and are not 🇩🇪 based, change your Twitter location to Lederhose, Germany and you’ll never see any 🐦hate speech again. I did. (picture me in Lederhose :) 🍻
What Else?
Very much in the theme of my upcoming 📕, the following episode from Quartz, dives into what went wrong with the world wide web and how we can fix it. The episode explores a breakdown in the value system that were the foundations of the World Wide Web as initially intended.
If you have a little more time on your hands and enjoyed Black Mirror, you will love Emma Thomson in the BBC’s Years and Years. The series explores family life in 2026, during Trump’s second term and broaches concepts such as Trans-Humanism. 🤖
More?
To regain a sense of freedom we are launching Empty Day. It is now planned for 12th October. A day of no social media. Imagine your social feeds empty and being able to connect IRL without any FOMO.
You can sign up here and join thousands of people in celebrating a day of social media silence.
And Lastly
We recently joined up with Headspace and a few other 🦸🏻‍♀️🦸🏼‍♂️ to wipe out nearly $30m of medical debt in Los Angeles. Medical debt is a major cause of homelessness in the US and we were able to buy it for 1¢ on the $1. Shortly, 16,000 people will receive a letter saying their medical debt has been relieved.
The next step needs to be San Francisco. Will you help us?
That’s it. Thanks for making it to the end. I know you get a lot of email, I’d like to make this worthwhile, so feedback is always welcome.
Thanks and enjoy the rest of your weekend.
Damian
